The resume of the analytical review “Six+ grave violations committed against children: challenges and consequences of 9 months of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022”
The military aggression of the Russian Federation led to numerous violations of Ukrainian children’s rights.
Russia commits such crimes against Ukrainian children as Killing and maiming children; Recruitment and use of children; Rape and other forms of sexual abuse against children; Attacks against schools, hospitals and protected persons, associated with them; Abduction of children; Denial in access to humanitarian aid.
The authors of the report systematized the information from the open sources regarding the main tendencies of the six grave violations against children during the armed conflicts for the period of nine months since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation, and also tried to determine the impact of the violations on the realization of the rights of children and on their lives.
Separately, our organization singled out such a violation as “destruction of identity.” In the explanations to the violation “abduction of children” indoctrination is mentioned, however at the time of writing the report, the authors could not find the criteria for its definition or examples of criminal prosecutions for it.
Conversely, the long-term occupation of the part of Ukraine (in particularly Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions) clearly demonstrated that since 2014 the occupying authorities have been systematically and purposefully instilling the “Russian identity” among Ukrainian children. As a result, some of them, after becoming adults, currently “knowingly” and “voluntarily” take part in the Russian-Ukrainian war on the occupier state’s side.а
Also, recommendations for international institutions, public institutions of Ukraine, the government of the Russian Federation, the armed forces, and armed groups of the parties to the conflict are indicated in the summary of the analytical review in terms of war crimes against children.
